Mastermind Semi Final Monday 27th March - fancy a wiki?

An interesting list of specialists for anyone thinking of doing the wiki challenge on tomorrow night’s Mastermind semi final specialist subjects. As listed on the BBC Mastermind website they are:-

The PDC World Darts Championship

The History of Transportation to Australia

Parks and Recreation

Queen Anne

I say with some confidence that I will not be matching last week’s aggregate total. I have a parents’ evening to prepare for so shan’t be googling any of them. For the record, here’s my prediction

PDC World Championship – maybe I might sneak 1 point. My interest in darts really peaked in the early 80s BDO era – Bristow and Wilson and Keith Deller and all that.

The History of Transportation to Australia is a subject on which I might well draw a blank – unless it asks about my several times great uncle, Jabez Rainbow who was a British Army officer who took a cutthroat razor to the throat of his ‘common-law wife’ in the 1840s when he was off his face on the opium derivative laudanum. She survived, and it was her testimony in his favour that meant his death sentence was commuted to transportation to Van Diemen’s Land – Tasmania. Interesting, but hardly likely to bring me any points.

Parks and Recreation. I know it’s a TV show but have never watched it. Royaume Uni nul points.

Queen Anne – well I always fancy that British monarchs give me a bit of a chance. So if I say 2 on this, then I’ll be disappointed if I don’t get that many. So basically, for the aggregate for the whole lot of tomorrow’s specialist, anything higher than three points will be a bonus for me.

Wiki Challenge

In case anyone was thinking of having a go at the wiki challenge for tomorrow night’s first semi final of Mastermind the subjects are Oscar Winning Performances of the 1990s, the Life and Death of Stars (presumably astrology rather than film and TV) Peep Show and The Great Escape (doesn’t say whether this means the real event, the book, the film or all three).

Couple of observations about the subjects. The first one must go a lot deeper than just who won Best Actor/Actress – Supporting Actor/Actress, I would have thought – surely must be asking a lot of details about the films for which they won. Again, the Life and Death of Stars seems unusually specific, but since I know so little about the subject who am I to judge? Peep Show was previously a subject in the 6th semi final of 2018 where it took Sarah Jane Bodell to within just one point of reaching the final. As for the Great Escape, well, it all depends on the scope of the subject. Personally I do tend to think that if the round was only focusing on the film then that’s a more narrow focus than I like to see – but as I said it may well be about the subject of the real life Great Escape, which would be perfectly valid. Just my opinion and as always, feel free to disagree.

It's an all bloke semi, and it looks to me as if first round leaderboard topper Michael McPartland is first up judging by the photograph.

If you fancy having a go at the Oscars, maybe this will help

In case you were considering the challenge

Yes, just in case you were considering having a go at the wiki challenge for tomorrow night’s final first round heat of Mastermind the subjects will be Christian Huygens, Jonathan Creek, the life and works of Artemisia Gentileschi and European Mammals. Sadly I don’t really have time for the challenge this week, and although I’ve had a good run of double figure specialist aggregates for the last few weeks I can see this un of fist round heats ending for me tomorrow with more of a whimper than a bang. I never used to watch Jonathan Creek. I know very little about Christian Huygens, and sadly not much more about Artemisia Gentilschi. I might get a couple on European mammals, but then there might not be any easy ones for me. If I get more than five in total for the aggegate I’ll have done well.

--------------

I’ve bitten the bullet and agreed to set the quiz for the club in three or four weeks’ time. I’m sticking to my resolution to only do I when asked and not volunteer but since Mr. N. asked me on Thursday last I wasn’t going to say no. Now this probably means that it will be at least a fortnight before I even think of it again, still, when I do start to think about it I will have to ask myself the perennial question. How low do you go? Or to put it another way, how easy do I want to make it? I’ve never had the experience of anyone coming up to me at the end of a quiz saying – thank you very much, but could you make it a bit harder next time? In my experience, and I’m sorry if this sounds like bragging (which it is, but I’m sorry if it sounds like it) what I think of as easy is not always what everyone else does. Mind you, on the other hand, what I think of as hard not everyone else does either.

If you have been setting quizzes regularly for the same venue for a long time, then maybe you’ve experienced what I’ve experienced. Namely that I’ll ask a question that I know I’ve asked in the past – quite a lot in some cases – and people still get it wrong. I mean we’ve all heard a question, thought – I’ve been asked this before – and then got it wrong. I find it can happen when you hear a question for the first time. You narrow it down to two options. You go for one of them, and the correct answer is the other one. Then, he next time you hear it you remember that you’ve heard it before and you had two options, but aaarrrrggghhh! You’ve got the wrong option fixed in your memory now. But those questions are thankfully few and far between. All part of the joy of quizzing, folks.

Ah, the appliance of Science. I went back to the official BBC Mastermind website, clicked where it said -more – and found out that the other specialist for the coming show on Monday is the Richard Sharpe Novels of Bernard Cornwell. Wiki Challenge - The Music of Radiohead

Okay – so I have given myself a good talking to. If I’m serious about using the wiki challenge to try to boost my specialist aggregate for the coming Mastermind heat – and I am – then the fact that I think the Music of Radiohead will be a more difficult subject to do the wiki challenge with isn’t a good enough excuse for not trying.
