You know, I made my last post about the qualifiers for the semi finals, and I realised there’s another point I’d like to make. Here’s the table of all of the contenders’ performances in the first round:-

Now, you may well notice that some of the contenders’ names
are in bold. They are the heat winners. Some of the contenders’ names are in
italics and these are the 6 highest scoring runners up. The 6 contenders who
would have taken repechage semi finals slots in years gone by. Yes, dearly beloved,
we are back on that hobby horse again.
Look, I do know that you’re never going to have a format
that pleases everyone. I understand that there is a substantial body of opinion
that says Mastermind is a tournament show, and the thing about tournament play
is that you have to be prepared to play against and beat anyone in any round.
If you happen to meet a contender who is stronger on the night in the first
round, then that’s bad luck but that’s he way it goes. I can’t argue against
the logic of this viewpoint and respect those who hold it.
However I do have a huge amount of sympathy for those
contenders who produce great first round performances yet miss out on the
semis. Maybe it’s because I played in 2006 when, along with Jenny ‘the Vixen’
Ryan I was joint highest scoring runner up in a heat but didn’t get to play in
the semis. Maybe not, though. Even if I had been in the semi finals I certainly
wouldn’t have won the series, and it gave me the spur to reapply the next year.
Does that mean I’m sitting on the fence a bit? Probably. I certainly
wouldn’t want to get to a state of affairs where only the top 24 scorers in the
first round go through to the semis, regardless of whether you ‘win’ your heat
or not. They did something like that in Sport Mastermind and I didn’t like it
run that way to be honest. If you win your heat you have a right to go to the
semi finals and that’s the way it should always be. But for what it’s worth,
James, Hilary, James, Ruth, Alexa and Pippa, you have my sympathy, and with a
tiny bit more luck you would have been there too.
