It would be interesting to see if it was right. I did try to contact Mr. McQuade last year after his victory in the Grand Final of Mastermind to offer my congratulations, but I never heard back from him.

Opaltiger - yes, I'm planning to do that. I'd be interested to hear what you make of it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5401280171563686515.post-46148542603234390062013-10-18T14:39:09.432-07:002013-10-18T14:39:09.432-07:00“Not a terribly exciting match,” according to Jack...“Not a terribly exciting match,” according to Jack. Well, it’s interesting that you should say that, because when I was watching my first few series of UC many years ago (and up until quite recently), I couldn’t help noticing that the last first round match almost invariably saw the losing team storm through to the repechage after being beaten in a close game. The trend was broken last year and this, which leads to the equally intriguing result that no losing team since my lot eight weeks ago have made it through – how very interesting. (As it also happens, I know that we were the fifth game to be filmed in this series, and the last of the repechage teams to film their debut.)

Talking of the repechage, I have just received word today about who’s going to be on next week. My suspicions are confirmed. When I warned about potential spoilers from the Radio Times, I was right, and that was why they were keeping hushed about the line-up for next week: Christ Church (as opposed to Bangor or Aberystwyth) are in there, playing Durham. This match is also the first to have been filmed in our new MediaCityUK studios in Salford. Looking at the preview clip on the BBC website, the new studio looks subtly different, but maybe that’s just because I know it’s moved house!

Apologies for the off-topic post, but Londinius, I was wondering if you or anyone else from the quizzing community could resolve a fuzzy memory of mine from what must be the first series of UC that I watched. I must have been only 9-10 years old at the time, and I clearly remember Roger Tilling calling “Strathclyde, McQuade”, after which Jeremy Paxman issued a ruthless retort along the lines of “That’s probably one of the biggest boos we’ve ever had on this show”! I’m guessing that this Strathclyde contestant was latter-day Mastermind winner Aidan McQuade, from what I’ve been able to discern, but it’s been annoying me for a long time that I cannot remember the question or the answer that got that response. I don’t suppose anyone knows/remembers/can find out?

(I would have flagged this up if I’d seen Strathclyde in this series, but alas, said institution has not been seen this year.)

Thanks again for your ever-comprehensive coverage of this fantastic first round, and I hope my quartet doesn’t disappoint in ten days’ time!
Cromarty(IV)https://www.blogger.com/profile/15342294193850474531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5401280171563686515.post-40119381829882683392013-10-18T12:07:30.972-07:002013-10-18T12:07:30.972-07:00Well, again, this wasn't a terribly exciting m...Well, again, this wasn't a terribly exciting match, but both teams made a very decent effort. Bangor, like so many others we've seen, played a good game, and could do well this year provided they don't get a tough draw. But Aberystwyth didn't disgrace at all, and had they not run out of steam in the final stretch, could well have reached the repechage.

On the bonuses, Aberystwyth managed 11/18, which is good, and Bangor's final tally was 22/37. There were three penalties, two of which were incurred by Bangor.

So, on to the repechage. No word on the draw yet, but my best guess would be Durham vs Christ Church, followed by Southampton vs Loughborough. Both should be good matches, one way or another.Jackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06254840979557920582noreply@blogger.com
